Blight or Art?
The MAK Center for Art & Architecture in LA is replacing dilapidated, unused outdoor advertising space with conceptual art in an exhibition called How Many Billboards?
Not only is this a really cool idea, but it raises some interesting questions about the societal effects of outdoor advertising. In this case, there's more than just the protect the aesthetic sanctity of public spaces argument going on here. (A position well represented by organizations like BanBillboardBlight.org)
MAK went after a now prevalent by-product of today's depressed ad market – the dearth of outdoor ad space left empty by the current economy. So here's a challenge, or should I say opportunity, for our cohorts at Clear Channel, CBS Outdoor and the rest. Put your unused inventory to Good use. Surely there are community causes and inspiring artists out there who would be way more than willing to fill that space with something beneficial. That is, of course, until your regional sales rep cracks the Calvin Klein account.
Why not create a contest? Best combination of cause and creative wins. The prize? They get production fees covered and you put them in the cue for posting on decommissioned boards when they become available.
The winners? Everyone.
